Rinjani Day 2, (almost) the summit. We began the grueling ascent at 2am to catch the sunrise. They told us walking up the sandy slope would be like taking two steps forward, one step back. At some point my thoughts shut off, lactic acid coursed through my legs, and I only managed to concentrate on the next step illuminated by my headlamp ahead. Soon, the wind became unbearable and many people started to lose their balance. Strangers huddled together behind rocks for warmth, as the guides told us it was too dangerous to go any further. We could practically touch the summit, it was so close. This was a humbling reminder that nature has and always will be bigger than humans, that it's not something to be conquered but revered. The shadow of Rinjani stretched across the sea and the sky, and we all seemed to be holding our breathes at that moment.
