Those angered by the players are missing the point of the protest. These players are not anti-American; they're anti-racism, police brutality, and Trump. If anything, people angered by this peaceful protest are actually helping make the point.
They are making a peaceful statement for a worthy cause. They are trying to bring attention to issues that most white Americans believe are a part of America's past. These athletes are speaking out against the strong undercurrent of racism that has only grown stronger under the current presidency.
It saddens me how many professing Christians are bashing these men for using their freedom of expression. If Tebow can kneel and declare his faith, then these men can kneel to declare their beliefs, too.
Far too many Christians muddle biblical teachings with nationalism. I have said before that I am not a patriotic person, although I do come from a military family. I'm thankful my father and my grandfather served to bring justice and peace and ensure freedom for not just Americans, but all involved.
However, I don't pledge allegiance to any flag. I don't put my hand over my heart when the anthem is sung. I haven't done either of these things for several years, because I have some personal convictions regarding it. Because I am not in the spotlight, I am free to do this with v little criticism.
I have no idea what it's like to be a black person in America. I do know that racism disgusts me, and that it is v present and active in our country. I support anyone who wishes to bring attention to this racism in a peaceful manner.
What saddens me is that more people are bothered by perceived anti-American actions than they are by the institutional racism, police brutality, and racial profiling.
This Trump-era America is not great. It's not better. I'm reminded of what Margaret Atwood's Commander said in The Handmaid's Tale, "Better never means better for everyone. It always means worse for some." Trump's America makes it "better" for racism to flourish, for nationalism to surge to dangerous levels, and for Christians to be swept up in promises that can never be kept. It's a "better" environment for America to be a god unto itself.
